My family and I have been long years of customers of Yoshinoya outlets in both Singapore and Japan for many years, particularly during our travels. We’ve always appreciated the consistent quality of their food. Being familiar with their beef bowl (gyudon), we often request an extra bowl of sauce to moisten the rice to our preference. We also enjoy the addition of cheesecake to their menu, which is a delightful touch. However, during our recent visit, the portion of beef seemed smaller compared to what we’ve had before—though I could be mistaken.

The place is cosy for a fast food chain. Service was ok. That was all that it offered. From here onwards, it’s all downhill. The order panel screen shows a decent bowl of gyudon with beef slices and lots of onions. But when the food arrived, there’s beef slices but only a mini skinny slice of onion. The bowl is small and rice is dried. Cost $6 for a small bowl. I compared this to Sukiya Gyudon restaurant. For the same price or even lower, you get a bigger bowl of beef rice, lots sautéed onion slices, spring onions, an onsen egg and much more. My first visit to Yoshinoya after many years and I believe will be my last for many years to come.

Update Jan 2025: Tried the new Teriyaki Chicken combo today hoping that I will be proven wrong but sadly it still falls well below expectations. It might be a pretty hefty size for a chicken thigh which I appreciate for $13.90, but where's the Teriyaki? I didn't taste anything from the skin nor meat, in fact I barely registered any taste for that matter, the entire chicken was bland, though it was cooked through. I have had BBQ chicken from supermarkets that taste better. I actually felt that the usual 3x fried chicken chunks were better, at least they had some taste. What happened to the Yoshinoya that first arrived in SG? I recall it was soooo close to the ones I had in Japan. But from that point it's been down hill all the way, the gyudon lost like 90% of its flavour and color, now it looks like a washed out, blanched version of the former. And they removed the Teriyaki Chicken combo meal! Replaced it with Karrage that's pretty weak. The Teriyaki chicken from before was grilled till tye skin was slightly charred and drizzled with Teriyako sauce it was heavenly. They did bring the Teriyaki Chicken back like last year for a short promo, but just like the beef, the chicken looked like it was boiled and then teriyaki sauce was doused over it. Sad.

I'd like to thank the staff on duty for being so welcoming and for helping us with positioning our baby stroller. The food itself was decent and I liked that the karaage was juicy. Would recommend for a fuss-free dining experience.

I’ve not had Yoshinoya for a very long time (could even be 10 years) because I remember their options being very limited in the past. I’m glad I decided to visit Yoshinoya (NEX) for a quick meal. While browsing through the menu at the ordering kiosk, I realized Yoshinoya has definitely made the effort to introduce new food items to cater to a wider customers base. Food quality and taste are still as good as before.
